Good news for the camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and governor Babajide Sanwoolu in Lagos as two strong members of the opposition in the state, left their party to support the APC candidate ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Ade Dosunmu, and the candidate for the Labour Party in Lagos Central Senatorial election, Adesunbo Onitiri on Tuesday announced their defection to the ruling APC.
While announcing their decision during the Lagos Central Leaders Conference, Onitiri cited the PDP’s lack of internal democracy and Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s call to support Peter Obi’s presidential bid as his reasons for switching parties.
In April 2022, Adesunbo Onitiri announced his intention to contest the Lagos Central Senatorial seat again in 2023 by purchasing a form at the national headquarters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja. However, in October 2022, Onitiri decided to leave the PDP for the Labour Party (LP) to contest the upcoming Lagos Central Senatorial election. Onitiri cited the PDP’s lack of internal democracy and Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s call to support Peter Obi’s presidential bid as his reasons for switching parties.
Prior to his defection, Onitiri was a prominent member of the PDP and had previously contested against Senator Oluremi Tinubu of the APC during the 2019 senatorial election, in which he was narrowly defeated.
