Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, his wife Beatrice, and medical doctor Dr. Obinna Obeta have been found guilty of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom.
After a six-week trial at the Old Bailey, the group was found guilty of facilitating the exploitation of a young man from Lagos, Nigeria, who was brought to London for the purpose of having his kidney harvested.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday, and sentencing will be determined at a later date by Justice Jeremy Johnson, according to a report by The Guardian UK.
The conviction marks a major victory for the UK’s anti-trafficking efforts, as the case was the first of its kind in the country. The victims’ family has expressed relief that justice has been served, but also sadness that their loved one was taken advantage of in such a heinous manner.
