“We have not been stopped from arresting erring drivers” -LASTMA Boss

Published

on

General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authourity (LASTMA), Olajide Oduyoye has urged Lagosians to ignore news that the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has cautioned its officials against arresting motorists.

In a statement signed by its Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Filade Olumide, the agency described the news as fake and urged motorists in Lagos to continue to be law-abiding.

“The attention of LASTMA management has been drawn to a continued fake news purported to have been pronounced by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu quoted thus “…Henceforth no LASTMA Officials (sic) should arrest (sic) any motorist, either commercial or private. The duty of LASTMA is to manage traffic and not to arrest anyone. I have heard a lot of complaint(sic), any Officials (sic) that violate the rule of his work, will be severely dealt with.”

“If at any time LASTMA Officials makes attempt to arrest you or forcefully enter your car, Don’t (sic) argue with them just allow the LASTMA to enter your car and call these numbers…”. 08129928600. 08129928550. PLEASE KINDLY SHARE.

‘This is about the third time that this type of story is making the rounds on social media by transmuting from the first one and second (created as a flyer) to this third one written like the pronouncement of the Governor, he recollected that the company that generated the first fake news have since apologized, retracted and pulled down the news from the company’s site earlier this year.

“The General Manager further explained that the primary duties of the agency is traffic control and management that includes the arrest of recalcitrant drivers as stated in the Law setting up the agency, this same law was reviewed by the Lagos State House of Assembly in the Year 2018 principally with that of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service, therefore the Governor who is our number one law abiding citizen and law enforcement officer in the State would not flout the law let alone provide the opportunity for others to do so.

“He therefore enjoined the law abiding citizens of Lagos State and drivers that come into the State, to at all times adhere strictly to the traffic laws of Lagos State in order to avoid paying the consequences of flouting it while he further advised that “we must all have a change towards positive attitude of obeying the Laws of the State which were made for the benefit of all, for orderliness and for fast paced socio-economic improvement of individuals, corporate entities and generality of the people.

“Oduyoye also stated that owing to “the recent #endsars protest violence which resulted in the looting, arson and destruction of twelve LASTMA zonal offices, physical attacks of LASTMA Officers, the events which has no less left unfortunate physical and psychological scars on our operational personnel.

“All the same we are taking stock, restructuring and re-strategising and this is the reason why we have only about sixty percent of our beats at some strategic intersections/ junctions to eliminate frictions, reduce delays and ensure better flow of traffic.

“We are aware of the traffic congestion suffered by commuters as a result of many damaged traffic light junctions, absence of BRT bus operations, illegal vehicular movements and the general lack of respect for driving ethics by some. In all, the safety of every LASTMA personnel as with all Lagos resident is equally paramount.”

“The General Manager hereby assures members of the public who since the lifting of the curfew by Mr. Governor and the full gradual return to normal life activities, may have been going through harrowing traffic experience on Lagos roads in the hands of lawless motorists for the reasons described earlier on Lagos roads to take succor in the fact that LASTMA is set to fully return to manage the road traffic especially as the different areas become less volatile.

“Oduyoye thanked all LASTMA officials from the management to field personnel especially, for their cooperation with him at all times, their efforts and dedication in ensuring traffic flows and thereby ensuring reduction in journey time spent by the citizenry. He asked that all stakeholders should look forward to better days ahead,” the statement read.

8 things Lai Mohammed said about EndSars, CNN’s report

Published

on

By

The Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Thursday morning reacted to an ‘exclusive’ report released on Wednesday by international news platform, -Cable News Network (CNN), addressing issues raised in the report.

The televised press address on the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) had a select team of Journalists in attendance.

These are eight main points of Mohammed’s address:

1.

THE FG WAS RESPONSIVE AND VERY RESPONSIBLE IN ITS HANDLING OF THE DEMANDS OF THE ENDSARS PROTESTERS

“The Federal Government was responsive and responsible in meeting the demands of the EndSARS protesters”

2.

WE DO NOT HAVE PLANS TO SHUT DOWN THE SOCIAL MEDIA

“The irresponsible use of social media by some unscrupulous persons aggravated the violence that erupted in the wake of the EndSARS protest and helped to precipitate the violence. While the government has no plans to shut down the internet, it will work with stakeholders to regulate the social media to curb abuse”

3.

WE CAN’TFOLDOUR ARMS AND ALLOW THE SOCIALMEDIA TO BE USED NEGATIVELY

“Those who use the social media responsibly have nothing to fear, but those who abuse it have every reason to be worried, as no responsible government will stand by and allow a few unscrupulous elements to set the country ablaze.”

4.

CNN’s REPORT IS JAUNDICED

“CNN goofed in its preconceived stance that the soldiers who were deployed to Lekki Toll Gate indeed shot at protesters, killing some of them. CNN relied heavily on unverified and possibly-doctored videos, as well as information sourced from questionable sources, to reach its conclusion. This should earn CNN a serious sanction for irresponsible reporting.”

5.

THERE WAS NO KILLING IN LEKKI

“While the Judicial Panel sitting in Lagos works to unravel what really transpired at the Lekki Toll Gate, available evidence so far points to the world’s first case of MASSACRE WITHOUT BLOOD OR BODIES.”

6.

KUDOS TO THE ARMY, POLICE, OTHERS

“The Federal Government commends the security agencies for acting professionally and showing utmost restraint all through the EndSARS protest and the ensuing violence, an action that saved lives and properties”

“Human Rights Organizations should note that the security agents are also human beings and they have rights too. Even if the organizations, for whatever reasons, are reluctant to recognize the human rights of security agents, they should quit vilifying them as they are wont to do. It is also disheartening that the human rights organizations have not seen anything wrong in the mindless violence that was perpetrated in the name of EndSARS.”

7.

DJ SWITCH IS AN AGENT OF FAKE NEWS

“DJ Switch (Obianuju Catherine Udeh) should quit peddling falsehood and present her case, with verifiable evidence, to the Judicial Panel sitting in Lagos. No agency of government has declared her wanted hence she has no reason fleeing or seeking asylum anywhere.”

8.

NBC WAS LENIENT WITH THE FINES ON AIT, CHANNELS AND ARISETV

“The sanctions imposed on some broadcast media organizations by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) are justified, in view of the unprofessional acts of the organizations which were in clear breach of the Broadcasting Code, as stated by the Commission. It is also imperative for the traditional media to authenticate information from the social media before pushing such to the public”
