Lagos Speakership Race hots Up As Obasa Parleys Fresh Members-Elect

Published

on

The race for the Speakership of Lagos State House of Assembly in the 9th Assembly has taken a new dimension as the incumbent Speaker, Rt(Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, would be holding a parley meeting this evening after the plenary with the newly elected members over his re-election bid to retain the seat.

As at the time of filing this report, the plenary is still on as seven committee reports were presented before the House for deliberation and adoption today.

It was gathered that the strategic meeting with the fresh members-elect was to romance them ahead of the inauguration of the 9th Assembly where the Speaker of the 9th Assembly would emerge. It is important to state that the 9th Assembly would be inaugurated likely Friday, 7th.

Some of the fresh members-elect sighted to attend the parley meeting are, Mr Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 2), Mr Temitope Adewale (Ifako Ijaiye 1), Mrs Anne Mojisola Macaulay ( Amuwo Odofin 1), Mr Wale Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1) and Mr Alao Oseni (Lagos Mainland 1).

According to reliable sources, the meeting would also be used to enlighten and educate the fresh members-elect on how they would vote in favour of Obasa on the inauguration day.

A source close to the major power broker of the House and a Senator-Elect, informed that the meeting would also include staunch supporters of Obasa who are perceived to be strong loyalists of the incumbent.

“Obasa will be meeting specially with fresh lawmakers-elect this evening after plenary and it is likely those returning lawmakers who are string loyalists would be in the parley meeting. This approach will help the Speaker to retain the seat if he succeeds in winning them to his side. Although, this will not be the first time he would be meeting them on his re-election bid”, said the source

It is interesting to point that since almost a month now, the battle for the Speakership of the Lagos State House of Assembly is hot up as noticeable principal officers are lobbying to take over from Obasa, while secretly consulting All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in the state most especially the members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to support their agenda.

Those jostling for the position with the incumbent are deploying different strategies to get the blessing and endorsement of the leaders of the party most especially the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
But as it is, Obasa may have edge over them as he had extended his tentacle to various interests whom he perceived to be working against his re-election bid.

What is obvious is that, the remaining few days to the inauguration of the 9th Assembly would throw up several intrigues and permutations which would shape the moves to the emergence of the Speaker of the 9th Assembly.

The family and political associates of the late Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the Senate, Senator Sikiru Adebayo Osinowo, have debunked comments credited to a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly on the cause of the death of Hon Olatunde Braimoh.

Honourable Hakeem Sokunle, Chairman of the House Committee on Health, had told the media that the late Braimoh died as a result of complications resulting from Covid-19 because he had contacts with the Late Senator Osinowo.

But reacting through the Media Office of the late Senator, family members and associates described the statement as reckless saying linking the death of the lawmaker to their patriarch is uncalled for.

“We are mortals and everybody has his or her appointed time. For our father and brother, their time has come, we can’t query Almighty Allah. So it’s shocking to say the late Braimoh contracted Covid-19 from our dear father,” the statement said.

According to the statement from Osinowo’s Media Office, many family members and associates have closer contact with the late Senator in his last moments and have no symptoms of the disease.

“Allah is the Creator of every being on earth and He takes the life of His creations anytime He wishes to do so. It is His wish that Senator Osinowo should die on Monday, 15 June, 2020 and it is equally His wish that Hon Braimoh should die on Friday, 7 July, 2020. We cannot question Him,” the statement concluded
