Burnt BRT: Inquiry Opens Today

The tribunal of inquiry into the road traffic accident and subsequent arson and vandalization of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses will have its inaugural sitting on Monday Sept 15, 2014.

BRT-Fire insideThe Lagos Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Ade Ipaye disclosing this in his office added that the tribunal will commence public hearing from Tuesday Sept 16 to 26, 2014 at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, [T Block] Alausa.

Ipaye said that some of the responsibilities saddled with the tribunal includes enquiring into the causes and factors leading to the road traffic accident involving a soldier]/motorcyclist and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus as well as the subsequent events on Ikorodu Road on Friday 4th July, 2014, and also make appropriate recommendations to prevent future occurrence of incidents of this nature.

It should be recalled that on the 4th July 2014, it was alleged that a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) hit and killed a soldier thereby leading to destruction of some BRT buses as well as vandalisation, arson, looting and harassment of innocent citizens.

His Excellency, The Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola [SAN] thereafter inaugurated a three-man Tribunal of Inquiry to look into the cause of the incident in order to avoid future re-occurrence.

The panel which is chaired by retired Justice Ebenezer Adebajo has as members, Mr. Nurudeen Ogbara, a lawyer, and Mr. Jude Igbanoi, the Deputy Law Editor of Thisday Newspapers.
