The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that the affected portion of the Ifako / Ogudu Bridge would be shut against motorists in order to allow the repair works as well as provide concrete reinforcement of the metal slab covering the expansion joints of the bridge.
The agency solicits for support and corporation of road users pending the completion of the rehabilitation works as this will drastically reduce the lanes and therefore calls for patience and discipline on the road.
LASTMA General Manager, Engr. Babatunde Edu said his Agency is mindful of the spillovers of traffic associated with this new move but explained that the agency took the decision after some professional deliberations and concluded that the best option that could save lives and property was to close down the affected portion of the bridge so as not to give way as a result of influx of vehicles rushing home from work.
He advised motorists in the State who are determined to use 3rd Mainland bridge from the island to avoid the bridge for now and make use of alternative routes such as the Carter bridge, Western Avenue, and Agege Motor road amongst others in order to reduce traffic, pressure on the bridge, and also ensure that the purpose of repairing the bridge is achieved and the constant recurrent is avoided and above all that the safety of Lagosians is further guaranteed.
The LASTMA boss said that the condoned portion of the bridge would be available for use as soon as possible and traffic would be allowed to move in the way it used to be before the commencement of the repair works by the Ministry of Works. He urged motorists to bear with the State government as the blockage of the opening portion was done in the interest of all. He added that traffic officials would be on ground to give traffic assistance to motorists.
