In an action to suggest that President Muhammadu Buhari gave a listening ear to the fears raised by Human Rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, the Federal government this morning announced the appointment of Prof Mahmood Yakubu as the new chairman of the Independent National ElectoraL Commission (INEC).
The lawyer, on Sunday raised some concerns about the loopholes in the appointment of some major personnel in INEC which he said is not constitutionally constituted to conduct the Kogi and Bayelsa States governorship elections.
But feelers from Aso rock indicate that the new INEC Chairman was appointed after an emergency Council of State meeting held at the villa. He will take over from Mrs Amina Zakari who has been acting as chairman of the electoral commission since the exit of former chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega.
Prof Yakubu, a professor of political history and international studies, was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.
The appointment however awaits the confirmation by a two-third majority of the Senate, for constituional validation.
